Polling and smart route polling

Hi,

What is the reason for polling and smart route polling?

Is polling to check zwave reachability of the device or to update the levels?
Is it something that will draw more power for battery devices.

What about smart route? How exactly does that work?

PS as an aside, any plans for a more comprehensive wiki or even a user editable one, maybe even on github or something.

I have the same question.

Found this on another part of the website. Desont' really answer you question but I thought it might help.

Smart Route Polls
Some controllers are able to use automatic routing (such as z-wave controllers) when sending polls. This command can help poll requests reach the target device in spread out z-wave networks; however, it should be used with caution as it can lead to USB stick "hold" times when the target device is out of optimal range.

Polling will poll the level of a device. This is useful for non-battery powered device, as battery devices will sleep and ignore the poll (and actually cause delays on your network).

Smart polling has to do with routes; it'll instruct the command to use dynamic routes to get to the target device, but requires devices with a new version of the z-wave firmware.

We had a Wiki actually... then they went down and we haven't replaced it. Github would work too and certain would be more reliable.
