When I first set up InControl, I opted to pick up an inexpensive HP Stream laptop. I'm starting to think that this might not have been a great idea, because every time I work on it it's super slow.

I'm just not sure what specifications are best for Axial. What makes the most difference, performance-wise? Is it RAM? CPU? Hard drive speed?

I recently came into a free Sony Core i7 laptop, so I'm going to throw an inexpensive SSD in there and transfer my installation to that. I'm hopeful that it'll give me better reaction times, because things just seem a little sluggish at the moment.

A lot of it depends on how you setup your scenes and triggers. For example, if you have lots of triggers that repeat every few seconds, you'll be taxing your CPU more than if you had one that triggers only on the change of a motion sensor.

I run my server on a small Atom tablet with only a gig of RAM. The UI is slow (everything is slow on that tablet!), but it handles my automation needs beautifully. 

When you experience slowness, where do you typically see it?

In general, everything is slower than I'd like. It's not nearly as bad as it used to be, though. A while back I came to the conclusion that my really bad delays were being caused by the super cheap Intermatic switches that I had throughout my house. I could tell that every time I replaced one of those with a good ol WD500Z the system sped up a bit. I've swapped them all out now, but things are still slower than I'd like.

I'll hit a button on a scene controller, and a good 3 seconds later the lights will start turning on, and don't finish until about 5-10 seconds after that. That's for scenes with the largest number of devices, like my evening scene that turns on at least 12 lights on my main floor.

I've said this before, but I've been spoiled. When I first got into ZWave, I had bought a bunch of stuff from a Radioshack fire sale. I installed over a dozen GE switches and lamp modules in my condo, and controlled them with the annoying GE remotes. Configuration was a nightmare, but when it was all set up, pressing a button on those remotes resulted in an instantaneous reaction from every single light. There was zero delay and everything happened at once. Ever since then, all the ZWave controllers I've used seem to turn on the lights in sequence, so there's already a delay for most of the lights, and then it takes a second or more to get the command to start in the first place.

I don't have any motion sensors in place yet, but I'm not confident that their reaction time will be quick enough to be useful. I already have an accessory switch in my laundry room that takes anywhere from .5-1 second to turn the light on.

I'm setting the new laptop up now and I'll see if things improve. I don't know how my HP Stream compares to your Atom laptop, but I'd guess that they're similar...

  • Can you detail how your scene controller is setup? 
  • How many total devices do you have being polled by Axial Server?

The scene controller isn't the issue. This happens with my two scene controllers (Enerwave 7-button scene controllers), Minimotes, and from the app its self. There's always a delay.

I don't really know how many polled devices I have. I'd estimate something around 48? There's scene controllers and remotes in there that don't get polled, so I'd guess it's around that.

Setup some audits on a few key devices - such as the Enerwave and then some lights that it controls. You can do the audit by double clicking the device then checking the appropriate checkbox to enable audits. Once you do that, restart your server and then perform a test by pressing a button on yoru Enerwave. In your logfile you'll see a list of times showing when Axial received the command and then when it sent it out. I'm curious on the numbers are showing.

Recently in my house I started noticing delays when pressing companion switches to turn on the other end of the relay. It was unrelated to Axial. When I started digging in, it ended up being interference with a new wireless device I had recently turned on. Once it was gone, the communication sped up and the delay almost disappeared.
