Total newbie lost trying to setup home energy meter

Ok, I know nothing about Home Automation. I bought the following from Amazon

Aeon Labs AEDSB09104ZWUS Aeotec Z-Wave Smart Energy Monitor

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DIBSKFU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref=ohauidetailpageo06s00

I thought I would be able to use the CT clamps to monitor my home energy usage at the electrical panel on the main. wrong! So, I bought a Z-stick controller.

AEONDSA02203 Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Stick Series 2 USB Dongle - DSA02203

And I installed incontrol HA on my PC.

But I can't seem to get any of this to work. I am lost.

I have managed to put the z-stick into a USB and get it to show up in my incontrol device list. Its showing the correct port number etc. Says its "online" in the bottom left corner of the interface. Shows no "associations" in the lower right (button is greyed out)

Now, I am trying to link the energy meter into the network. (do I even have a 'network'?)

I have the batteries installed in the energy monitor, and have pushed the little button in the back. I have the tried the instructions that came with the energy monitor.
- I unplugged the z-stick from computer usb.
- press the "action button" on the z-stick ( I assume that's just the button on it, there is only one)
- press the "action button" on the energy meter (the black one on the back by the batteries I assume)

In the incontrol software, I see a "motion sensor" that has come up with an icon of a question mark. I chose "energy meter" in the drop down menu on the right. I then right clicked on the device and hit autoconfigure. I asked me to "wak up" the device. I hit the button the energy meter and then clicked ok. it said autoconfigure was successful. If I right click on device, click "properties" and then click manufacturer info button it shows it as "Aeotec Home Energy Meter" so it obviously has talked to this device somehow and knows its there.

Then I read this:
http://aeotec.com/z-wave-home-energy-measure/918-home-energy-meter-instructions.html

It says
"Note
If the Home Energy Meter is not currently paired into a Z-Wave network, the LED on the Home Energy Meter will blink after pressing the button located near the batteries."

Right now the energy meter LED is dark. (Z-stick is in USB on computer and is solid blue LED) If I press the button on the energy meter by the battery it blinks quickly a few times and then is solid red.

does that mean "its not currently paired into a z-wave network" as the above indicates?

And what's next? All I want to do is somehow use this to see peak KW over the next few months. I am trying to determine how many amps I pull (worst case) and what size generator I would need to buy in order to backup my whole house. I know I can shed load by turning off certain breakers etc. But, I would like to look for a large genset on craiglist that can run everything if need be. I don't want to assume 200amps (rating of panel) since I know i probably never get anywhere close to that.

Thanks so much. I really don't want to put any more money into this, I am not going for a HA system, I just need to record some data on energy usage.

Maybe I should be looking for something more like this?
http://alexnld.com/product/ac-100a-digital-led-power-meter-monitor-voltage-kwh-time-ammeter-with-ct/?gclid=CjwKEAiAiZK1BRD509nPsYiUk2YSJAAMoAwCUkQFKkMSzj0G9LtIXtRpxKBnNZmlR6KvAOKL9vThoCH5nwwcB

Peak KW or Amps can't be determined from the power bill, it only gives KWh which is an aggregate.

Thank you for your h

Grab the 30-day pro trial to make sure the free version isn't what's causing your missing data.

Would you also perform another auto configure and provide the resulting screen shot of the message you see?
