Weather device doesn't work

I'm trying to work with the included virtual weather device, but it's quite frustrating. I've put in the correct lat/long, but it's still not working. I checked it this evening, and despite every weather service I've checked saying it was 39-41 degrees, the weather device said it was 54F. So I decided to go offline and back on again, and now the weather device doesn't show anything at all! Where does it get its data? How do I make it update the data correctly? How do I fix it if it's incorrect?

Same Problem with Version 3.126.530.5.30731

So you're having the issue too? I just checked and the weather device is showing info again, but it's clearly wrong. It seems like it might just be set to update very slowly or something? Maybe it's showing warmer temperatures because it's still showing what the temp was earlier today? Unfortunately I see no way to force an update or adjust how often it checks.

What's up with this thing? Seems like if it's going to be included in every InControl install, you might want it to work properly...

It updates ones a day. In Switzerland this exactly 1:06 am

Seriously? Once a day? Is that by design? What good is the "current temp" reading?

Dignan17 posted this 12 April 2015

Can we get anyone from InControl to respond to this question? You folks include this device with every InControl HA installation, yet it clearly doesn't work as the user would expect. I would assume that "CurrentF" would show me the local temp in Fahrenheit, but it clearly is not. You even have stuff like wind direction and speed. These things are obviously supposed to update often throughout the day, but it looks like they just sit there. I also have no idea where it's getting this data.

Hi, say that the weather device does not work as it should.

I have the same problem, often does not have the correct temperature and other times it does not update.

I opened an idea to use other APIs more reliable:
http://incontrolha.uservoice.com/forums/218427-general/suggestions/7248927-use-yahoo-api-for-weather-device

put a vote so begin developments!

It's a problem with the guys who provide the API - their service just randomly dies. As is noted earlier in the thread, we plan on changing it to a new API in the very near future (could be next week!)

Great to hear! I'm excited to see the change.

But I think you might be confused. There was no mention of an API issue in this thread...

I was referring to Giunka's post where he submitted the suggestion to change API's.

Anyway, new weather device is live in the latest version found at www.incontrolha.com (login then click downloads).

Ooo! Great!

And thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware of that post.

Looks good. Any chance we can get some kind of rain forecast. Maybe exposing the Yahoo 'condition code' would be easy. Would love to have inControl automatically skip watering my lawn if there is rain forecasted.

In the future it might be advantageous to offer the end user a choice of weather API's such as Weather Underground, Euro Meteo, OpenWeatherMap, Forecast.io, etc. as they all offer free API keys and can vary in information provided and reliability. A number of other HA apps and controllers do this now.

Choice is good rather than be locked into a hard coded single point of failure, yes?

I agree, with a service like Weather Underground you can have your own weather station device on the Weather Underground service and get real time weather at your location. That would be great!
Thanks,
Jim
