- How can I rename the device (I've searched everywhere for documentation and can't find it)?
2. An appliance switch registers as a Dimmer Switch. How can I change it to an 'on and off' device with a name (see question 1)?

For future newbs:
1. Renaming: Go to the right panel on the device list and you can rename it by highlighting over the name.
2. Type: Right below it

I actually get this question a lot. Here's a few more ways to rename:
1- From the Android app, long tap a device's image to get a 'Rename' menu
2- From the iPhone app, tap the device's image to get more options, such as edit where you can rename
3- From the InControl GUI on your PC, you can also right click a device to get the option to rename
