3g Access of Your InControl Server

To access InControl over your 3g network, you need to perform a couple of steps:

1) If you have Windows Firewall, be sure to open either allow InControl (mls.incontrol.server.exe) or open port 1178 and port 8711. This tutorial should help you perform the steps required. Sometimes Anti-virus programs will have their own firewall that you'll also need to either disable or open allow.

2) Forward ports in your router. Portforward.com is a great resource for this. You'll need to know what your computer's local IP address is as part of the instructions that the PortForward.com website gives you. Read this to find some instructions for XP and Windows -- remember, you want your LOCAL ip, not your external -- these instructions are at the bottom of the page.

Additionally, when you forward a port, you need to forward port 1178 and port 8711.

Once this is done, find out your External Ip address -- as this is how you'll find your server. The instructions we linked above for finding your IP also tells how to get your external IP. Once you know this, test to make sure you were successful by opening this URL in a browser: http://129.85.215.21:1178/zwave/devices?password=123 (you need to change the parts in black to match what your external IP is and your password). Note: This test may only work if you are outside your local network -- for example, at a friends house or from your Android or iPhone's 3g network.

Just a tip...

Most people have a dynamic IP address from their ISP and not a static IP (you have to pay more for that). You can subscribe to a DDNS (dynamic DNS) service (usually very cheap) so that when your ISP changes your IP address, you can still get to your network from the outside world. For example, D-link offers a free service to those with d-link router. When you sign up, your router will send automatically the service the new IP address when your ISP changes it. When someone (anyone, so be careful) goes to youraccountname.dlinkddns.com, traffic goes to your router on the internet. Instead of using the static IP address, you use youraccountname.dlinkddns.com. Then you would route the port just as described in the first post.

I also recommend opening the port in the software firewall rather than in the router itself. Assign the PC running InControl a static IP address within your private network. Then you can route the outside call directly to that specific computer through that specific port keeping the rest of your network off the grid. It will take some googling to get the specifics, but if you are reading this you can probably handle it.

I have not tried this with the InControl software yet (it is on my list), but it works with other applications I am using.
