do you guys know a link on how to set up the direct connect for newbie? i tried following the direction from in control website

1. Open port 8711 in your Windows firewall on your InControl computer.
2. Configure your router to forward traffic from port 8711 to your InControl computer. For best results, setup a static IP address on your InControl computer.
3. Find out your external IP address by visiting http://www.whatsmyip.org/
4. Enter your external IP address in the settings menu inside your InControl mobile app. Specify to "Use direct connect."

i open the port on my windows firewall
i did the port forwarding (netgear router)
on the app the only option or setting i can change is (HOST NAME, PORT, SERVER PASSWORD)

where do i put my IP address there??? i got my IP address using (http://www.whatsmyip.org/)

I'm using Cloud on iPhone 5. Either locally or when away from home, response time is never more than a second or two - either when getting the initial connect data, or when changing a device.

What are people using here?

I've been using cloud connect and I'm finding it slow for the app.

I'll open the app and no devices, press the refresh button and averages around 30 seconds to a minute before the devices come on.

I've also enabled Push ID for the widgets.

Wow that's a long response. I use cloud at home and it's nearly instant. I'm curious if you find it behaves differently from a fresh start... so kill the app using a task killer (or a fresh reboot of the device) and then launch fresh and see if you notice the delay or not.

Yes I have tried with a fresh start. I restart my phone about once every few days as it freezes a lot since it is old. I'll have to check with my wife's phone to see if it does it as well.

Okay a few things I've noticed.

Direct connect to external IP address with port opened, InControl app updates within 1 second, sometimes less.

Cloud connect, a lot longer, I tried a few times and anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds.

Each time in between I closed the app down.

I'll do more testing when I'm out of the house on 3G data and on another wifi.

I haven't been able to get the cloud working for a while now. My PC and phone both say they are connected but my phone just doesn't refresh any data. I have to use direct connect all the time now, which can be occasionally problematic due to my firewall and ever changing IP address on my phone…..I guess I need to configure my firewall a bit more!

On my firewall I've opened the port and I'm lucky I get a static IP from the ISP.

I find with direct connect when I'm on the home WiFi it is as quick as everyone mentions here. Half a second if that.
Out on 3G data, it is a little slower but does connect, sometimes a few seconds.

With cloud connect, sometimes it takes too long and seems a lot more hit and miss.

Host name is the external ip address you've got, port is 8711, and the server password it's what you set on the software under options, connection.

This is what your connections looks like?

http://imgur.com/buKkFMe

Enable Direct connec: ticked host name is the IP address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Port: 8711 Server Password: yyyyyy

If all that is correct then I suspect either the port forward of the firewall.

If you are on the same WiFi as the server, try the direct IP address of the Server in the Host name.

Yeah, I did all that and can't connect direct. I hate using the cloud because it seems like every time I travel I lose the connection and have to be home to get it back. I need to Direct Connect!

monkey-magic posted this 02 February 2014

Sorry, you tried the local IP address as well when connected to your local WiFi?

Firewall port is opened?

OK, I think I got it working now. I thought the IP was the one that my router says it's using but I went to the whatsmyip website and got the current one. When I got my current IP address it says it may not be that tomorrow. Will I have to keep checking the IP and update it? I guess you can't just shut down the cloud? It says I'm still connected to it but I clicked Direct connect and it seems to be using that.

Unless your ISP gives you a static IP, it will likely change at some point -- either as a result of a power failure or as a result of the ISP forcing a new one onto you. To get around this, check into a dynamic DNS service. They'll give you your own domain name that always knows what your IP is, and you'll enter that domain name into your "Ip address" box in your InControl app.

I am trying to use a direct connection without any success. I have tried the local address under the host name and I still can't make a connection. Any suggestions? I have tested it every way I can think of.

Usually a firewall issue. Have you checked that? Try turning the firewall off first and then see how it goes.

Klutz, I set up my firewall rule but still couldn't get it to connect. I even double checked it nut on the 3rd look I saw that under true/false false was selected. I changed it to true and it connected.

A lot of people having dynamic IP addresses assigned by their ISP, so getting direct connect to work outside the home might be tough.

That being said, what about using direct connect inside the home? Is there a way to just connect the mobile device over the home LAN network directly to the server without have to come in through the outside WAN?

You can of sorts, when you put in the internal IP of the Server it does connect but that will only work when you are at home.

I tried it a while ago and for testing connection speed/responsiveness.

Oddly, entering my server's local IP address as Host Name, Port 8711 (as set up in IC HA), Server Password (as set up in IC HA), and checking Enable Direct Connection results in my tablet no having any connection to the server. It will only cloud connect.

What I'm not keen on with cloud connect is how it times out and has to be reset. This means you can't just leave a dedicated tablet on the coffee table for control, because every time you pick it up you have to reconnect and refresh. Rather cumbersome when it takes longer to operate the room lights via tablet than just walking over and flipping on the light switch.
