I have tried repeatedly to add my Kwikset Z Wave lock and it keeps saying it can't add the device.

I originally had it paired with my ZStick S2, but I removed it and tried to add it back using the 'add device' menu option. The first time I tried, it displayed a dialog within a second or two saying it had failed to add the device. I have tried removing it and adding it several more times and now it doesn't display any dialog until I click the close button on the add device dialog, then it displays the dialog saying it failed to add the device. Below is my log file since midnight last night. It contains a number of other errors as well as my attempts to add the device this morning.

I assume you've tried these steps for adding a lock?

Do you have your USB stick within an inch or two of your lock when you try to "Add Device" from InControl?

Could you also re-paste the log from your "add attempt" from this morning? It appears that it didn't make it into the logs.

I did try the steps as listed, however my ZStick was much further than 1 inch. I have 2 questions about how to do it with a laptop. First, I have a server configured to run InControl as well as some other software and it will be very difficult to move that machine to within 1 inch of the lock. I can install InControl on a laptop and take it to the lock to try to register, but if it is successful, is there any data then on the laptop that I need to move back to my server machine when I put the ZStick back in the server? Is all the lock data contained in the ZStick? Second, my server machine is the one licensed with the Pro version which is required for lock support, will I be able to also license my laptop to do the registration?

I will try to paste the log below again:

It appears I cannot post a long enough message to include the entire log, so below is what I think is the revelant part. Note that I am using the Beta driver and I updated my ZStick to the latest firmware this morning. I am also using the SiLabs drivers. It is running Windows 7 x86, single core, hyper-threaded, 2.5 gig Ram.

You can install on a laptop, but you'll need to activate the software on it, which is OK to do. You are correct that the information is stored on your zstick, so all you will need to do is use the laptop to add the lock, then move the usb stick back to your pc/server and restart the InControl service. After a minute or so the lock will appear in side InControl. Be sure to exclude the lock then use the "Delete" button to remove it from InControl.

hickoxn posted this 30 January 2013

I got it working. Looks like the answer was moving closer to the lock. There is a long delay at times from the request to lock/unlock until it happens, but so far it has worked every time. I noticed that when the lock is manually open/closed, InControl doesn't seem to detect the change, it this normal?

Ryan-Scott posted this 30 January 2013

The delays are because of the security encryption going back and forth. Right now InControl doesn't detect when it gets unlocked, though it's a change that's being added.

Also, make sure your poll time isn't too high on the lock because the delays could leak into other parts of your network if it is.

What version of InControl are you using? You should grab the latest version -- which is 3.31.

When you setup the lock, are you following these steps exactly -- including the part that states you need to have your USB stick w/InControl within 1-2 inches of the lock?
