I am new to this forum and also to home automation. I just purchased an Aeon Z stick light. I have some more items on there way to me but due to my limited play time I try to work a little on this system every night.

My goal is to build a system that helps manage energy usage as well as adds neat gagets to my house. I am trying to creat a garage door opener via smart phone and have email alerts for the door if left open.

I started to set up the smpt email in the options menue of the free version and when i send a test email (using my gmail address) i recieve an error saying it has timed out. My computer skills and spelling skills are equal to that of a trained monkey please excuse these things and thank you in advance for your help.

Well, I'm no expert - I'm new to Z-Wave and InControl as well, but I will give it a shot:

Try the following settings:
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP Port: 587
User Name: @gmail.com
Password:
Use SSL: Checked
From Address: @gmail.com
To Address: @gmail.com

I have Outlook set up to use Gmail via SMTP. If you have difficulties with the above settings, try setting the Port to 465. I have two accounts and one uses 587, the other uses 465.

Side note on the garage door controls:

I'm also wanting to set up my doors. After researching, here are the items I'm going to get:

Evolve LFM-20 Isolated Contact Module from Amazon ($49.85 as of 2013/11/21)
Need one per door. This is used to trip the garage door opener as if you pushed the door switch.

Schlage RS100HC Door & Window Sensor from Amazon ($38.54 as of 2013/11/21)
Need one per door. This is used to sense if the door is open of closed.

I chose the Evolve LFM-20 since my opener switches have no power near them (at the door to the house). They will be mounted in single-gang boxes in the ceiling next to the AC outlet that the opener plugs into. The wiring for this module can be found in the manual or here, but basically needs to be:
White - Connect to Neutral/White
Black - Connect to Hot/Black
Green - Connect to Ground/Copper/Green
Yellow - Connects to an auxiliary switch, but I will not be using
Blue - Connect the Blue pair to the Door switch terminals on the opener. They are isolated relay contacts and carry no voltage, only complete the circuit like the wall switch does.

An alternative to the Evolve module would be the Remotec ZFM-80 ZWave Dry Contact Module from Amazon ($48.00 as of 2013/11/21). Manual here.
The nice thing about this one is that it gives you the pushbutton door control on the front - would be mounted in a box with a "Decora" style wall plate. It also has terminals for an extra switch (like the existing door opener switch). The bad thing is this one needs AC power where you mount it, and in my case I don't have it where the opener switches are currently mounted.

An alternative to the Schlage Door/Window sensor would be the Potter Amseco ODC-59A Overhead Door Switch from Amazon ($15.02 as of 2013/11/21).
The nice thing about this one is that it is DESIGNED for garage/overhead doors and gives you more flexibility in mounting. The bad thing is that this STILL REQUIRES the Schlage Door Window Sensor because this doesn't do ZWave. The Schlage sensor has external switch inputs that this would connect to (see the customer pictures on Amazon where somebody used it in that configuration). For my situation, I'm just going to have to get creative on mounting the Schlage because I don't want to have to spend the extra $15.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input. I tried the 587 port and quickly got an error "there was a problem sending test email the remote certificate is invalid" when I use the 465 port I still get the same message, it seems to work on it for a minute or two then finaly "there was a problem sending test email the operation timed out". As far as the garage door opener I used the FS20Z-1 it works great.

I dont quite understand the email problem but I think some one with more skill than I will have the answer.

Did you enable POP3 access in GMail?

See this article.

Are you on the latest version of InControl? There was an older version that had certificate problems (don't recall which version that was though).
